Antica famiglia spagnola, detta Aprile o D'Aprile, oriunda da Valencia, ove era detta "Avril", passata a risiedere in Sicilia, al dir del Mugnos, all'epoca di Federico II d'Aragona. Tal casato, dunque, godette chiara nobiltà in Caltagirone, Noto e Modica, con il titolo di barone di Gima e Soprana. Esso, inoltre, nel corso dei secoli, sempre riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Notiamo, infatti, un Carlo con la carica di capitano negli anni 1635-36-37 e con quella di proconservatore nell'anno 1635; un Vincenzo barone delle Segrezie e senatore nell'anno 1656-57; un altro Vincenzo venne, il 20 aprile 1727, investito della baronia di Gimia Soprana (baronia che, all'abolizione della feudalità, troviamo in potere di Vincenzo Aprile e Benso, che ne era stato investito a 10 aprile 1788). Un Antonino con bolla magistrale dell'ottobre 1789 esecutoriata a 20 febbraio 1790 venne insignito della croce di giustizia dell'ordine
