Famiglia assai antica ed illustre, delle sue origini non si hanno notizie certe se non che il cognome è toponimo di un territorio. Le ipotesi sono due, la prima è che sia originaria del territorio di Arelia (Areglia) in Emilia Romagna di cui abbiamo un esempio nel XIV secolo con Johannes de Paulus de Arelia, soldato di ventura al servizio dei Visconti; la seconda è che provenga dal paese di Areglia in val Curone da cui deriva la cognominizzazione e l'antichità millenaria. Nel corso dei secoli alcuni membri di questa casata si propagarono in diverse regioni d'Italia ed i loro nomi si trovano ricordati in testi, atti notori e contratti di acquisto di terre e case fin da tempi molto antichi.
