Antica ed illustre famiglia, originaria di Matera, la quale risulta ascritta al ceto nobile, di detta città, sin dal 1518, in persona di un Matteo. Tal casato, inoltre, ebbe il titolo baronale e possedette i feudi di Laporano, in terra d'Otranto, e di Lizzanello e, come rilevasi da documenti ed atti notarili, sin dai tempi più remoti, si distinse sempre per gli illustri personaggi, ai quali diede i natali. Tra questi, ricordiamo: Alberto, dottore in "utroque jure", vivente in Matera, nel 1532; Saverio, dottore in Sacra Teologia, vivente in Matera, nel 1554; D. Gio.
