Antico e nobilissimo casato del Sud Italia, detto Maio, Di Maio o DE MAYO, presente nel territorio del Regno di Napoli, sin dai tempi della dominazione angioina. Il primo di lei personaggio, di cui si abbia certa novella, è un Matteo, il quale fu creato Cavaliere dal Re di Sicilia, sembra nel 1272, e che divenne Tesoriere degli Abruzzi, nel 1294. Molti i componenti, di tal casato, che furono capitani o governatori per conto degli Angioini. In ogni modo, la famiglia, nel corso dei secoli, si moltiplicò in numerosi rami diffusi per tutto il Mezzogiorno. Qualche fonte li indicava come feudatari di Sant'Agata dei Goti. Per quanto riguarda il feudo di Sant'Agata si può affermare con sicurezza che fu "amministrato" e guidato da tal casato ma non si hanno molte informazioni sulla durata del dominio; si sa solo che, nel 1343, fu ceduta a un figlio illegittimo di Roberto I
