Antica casato, che l'Inveges vuole originario della Provenza, trapiantata in Palermo nei primi del sec. XVII, con due cugini, Luigi ed Onorato Salerno, i cui discendenti occuparono la carica di senatore. Al dir del Villabianca, invece, detta famiglia venne portata in Sicilia dal nobile Giovanni Salerno sec. XVI, come risulta dal suo testamento, presso notar Lojacono 1550. Fu ascritta alla Senatoria nobile della città di Palermo sui primordi del secolo XVII, ed occupò le nobili cariche di giudici della R. Corte pretoriana, di senatori, sindaci, governatori della Tavola e del Monte di Pietà, spedalieri di S. Bartolomeo, tesorieri del senato, consoli di commercio, ministri della Giunta pretoria, deputati del regno, viceportulani di Palermo, e rettori dell'Opera di Abatellis e di Novaro. Carlo Salerno fu governatore del Monte di Pietà di Palermo nel 1729 e deputato del regno nel 1790. Vincenzo Salerno il 15 Sett. 1638 fu investito della baronia di
