L'origine comune dei Lomello e dei Da Cerreto è, come accennato manfredinga: l'imperatore Ottone III fin dall'inizio dell'XI sec. aggiunse alla carica di conti palatini d'Italia le due contee territoriali di Pavia e Lomello investendone la ricca e potentissima stirpe dei signori di Lomello che tale dignità lungamente conservarono; carica e titolo meramente personali che l'evolversi dei tempi e circostanze favorevoli resero poi ereditari di fatto. Ribellioni e moti insurrezionali del popolo pavese contro il potere feudale dei conti palatini si alternarono a brevi periodi di pace dall'inizio del 1000 sino al 1140 ÷ 1145 epoca in cui il comune di Pavia, accentuandosi le ostilità, decise l'assoggettamento della Lomellina al fine di liberarsi da un potente nemico, distruggendo per prima la rocca di Lomello sede abituale dei conti.
