Antica ed assai nobile famiglia bolognese, conosciuta come Dainese o Dainesi, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Signori di un omonimo feudo nel bolognese, gli esponenti di tal casato ebbero anche il titolo comitale sopra la terra di Bruscolo. Il primo personaggio di cui abbiamo novella è un Sante, del fu Andrea, che, il 9 maggio 1377, fece parte del gruppo di ambasciatori che per conto della città di Bologna si recò da papa Gregorio XI, con l’incarico di fare atto di sottomissione alla Chiesa e trattare la pace. In seguito alla loro azione diplomatica, il 4 luglio 1377, ad Anagni, il comune bolognese stipulò un patto con la Santa Sede, ove la città riconosceva la propria dipendenza dal papa e accettava come vicario Giovanni da Legnano, principale artefice del patto con il papato. Tradizionalmente la famiglia si dedicò alle professioni giuridiche
