L'illustre famiglia Dalmaggi è annoverata tra le più nobili casate, che ressero nei secoli XIII e XIV le sorti di Brescia. Essa era, in origine, detta Madius, in seguito Maddi, ed infine Dalmaggi. E' noto che per porre fine all'anarchia insorta dalle lotte tra fazioni guelfo e ghibelline il Gran Consiglio deliberò di affidare il governo cittadino al vescovo Berardo la cui saggezza ed energia riuscì con la pace giurata dai contendenti nel 1298, a ristabilire ordine e tranquillità nella patria dilaniata. Dal 1275, anno di sua elezione all'episcopato bresciano, sino al 16 ottobre 1308 in cui calò ella tomba seppe acquistarsi prestigio e stima universali tanto da essere stato prescelto come arbitro nelle contese tra Bergamo e Milano; di tendenze ghibelline, sebbene uomo di Chiesa, mirava a rendere ereditario il governo della città nella sua famiglia per cui alla sua morte si riaccesero le lotte tra i suoi fratelli
