Cette famille est bien véritablement originaire de Bretagne où elle était établie depuis plusieurs siècles. On la retrouve à différentes époques, en divers localités et il y a eu nombreux personnages illustres de ce nom. On signale les personnages dignes de mémoire: Philippe, témoin dans une donation de Raoul de Fougères à l'abbaye de Savigné en 1157, au nombre des défenseurs de Dol, assiégé par le roi d'Angleterre en 1173; trois chevaliers croisés en 1158; Guillaume, chevalier dans une montre de 1351; Jean, accompagna du Guesclin dans son expédition en Normandie en 1378. Fondu dans Scépeaux. On remarque (dès le XIIIème siècle) des alliances importantes avec des familles nobles en Bretagne et autres régions françaises.
