Consultando tutti i fascicoli possiamo affermare che la più antica testimonianza di questo illustre cognome si trova nel comune di Velay (Francia). Negli atti di Buy, una città vicina, ci riferiscono Bertran Davis, un gentiluomo dell'alta borghesia, console di quella città, che fu vicario alla scuola di San George in una data antichissima (1304) e un altro discendente di la stessa famiglia lo fece nel 1364. Secondo il cronista mediceo Jehan Davis, aveva costruito la cappella di San Rocco e Santa Maddalena nella chiesa dei giacobini dove riposarono le sue spoglie dal 1380.
