Antica e nobile famiglia messinese, fregiata del titolo di "Barone di San Teodoro", con un Francesco, console del Mare in Messina, nel 1704/5, che ottenne, dalla donazione dello zio F. Campolo, il titolo di marchese di San Teodoro, in data 1 marzo 1731. Tuttavia, una ancor più avita nobiltà, raggiunta dal casato, è testimoniata si dal XVI secolo, con l'iscrizione di un messer Paolo alla mastra nobile del Mollica (lista XI, anno 1597). L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di molti genealogisti, potrebbe derivare da alcune modificazioni di fonetica dialettale del nome latino Mattheus; sebbene, comunque, non possano escludersi derivazioni da alcuni toponimi omonimi, quali Mazzeo (ME) o San Mazzeo (CZ).
