Antico ed assai nobile casato siciliano, detto de Benedictis o De Benedittis, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in una forma patronimica, ove il "De" sta per "figlio di", del nome Benedetto, portato probabilmente dai padri di un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. In ogni modo, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che resero illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi e nel servizio militare. Fra questi, senza nulla levar al valore degli omessi, contasi: Cristoforo, dottore in leggi, castellano di Mistretta nel 1448, il quale comprò nel 1454 da Pietro Cardona il feudo ed il castello di Bilici; Orlando, il quale fu giurato di Palermo nell'anno 1329-30, carica occupata da un Vincenzo negli anni 1495-96 e 1506-7 e da un Paolo nell'anno 1539-40;
