Chevalerie puissante dès 1173 qui compte parmi ses membres les barons de Montpeloux, les seigneurs de St-Anthème, d'Auzelle, de la Chaux, d'Usson, de la Marade, etc. Elle tire son nom du château de la Roue près St-Anthème (Auvergne - confins du Forez). Humbert fit plusieurs legs au prieuré de St-Sauveur et à l'abbaye de La Chaise-Dieu en 1173. Pierre, chanoine et fordoyen de N.-D. du Puy, transige le 17 septembre 1245. Armand I, seigneur de la Roue, est dit frère de Guillaume (1233) et de Léotard, abbé de St-Vosy du Puy (1247). Pierre-Armand et Gonet frères, étaient seigneurs de la Roue et de Montpeloux en 1257. Guillaume, évêque du Puy de 1260 à 1282, fils d'Armand II, chevalier, seigneur d'Aubrigoux, et de Jeanne de la Roche, fit construire de château d'Espaly. Sa soeur, Margurite, était abbesse des Chazes dès 1282. Bertrand fut convoqué en 1304, avec les principaux seigneurs d'Auvergne et de Forez, pour la guerre de Flandre. Eteinte avec Sibylle, soeur et héritière du précédent, alliée dès 1290 à Gilbert de Solignac, baron de Solignac et de St-Agrève en Velay, dont la posterité prit le nom et les armes d ela Roue.
