Assicurano Mugnos ed Ansalone che la nobile famiglia Marino da Genova, la quale godette la primaria carica della Repubblica, cioè il dogado. Boemondo Marino fu console nel 1146. Dopo di lui Pileo e Domenico furono arcivescovi in patria, il primo nel sec. XV, il secondo nel successivo. Giovan-Paolo fu capo di ventiquattro ambasciatori che nel 1499 i genovesi inviarono a Luigi XII re di Francia. Un ramo di questa illustre famiglia con molte ricchezze sotto Fedrico II imperatore passò in Sicilia. Nulla diremo de' grandi carichi occupati in quella repubblica, solo ci fermiamo ad un Alessio residente in Palermo, ad un Antonio in Noto, ad un Uberto in Messina personaggi assai rilevanti sotto il cennato imperatore, e che furono ceppi di tre casati distintissimi. In quanto a quello di Palermo il Villabianca ci fa sapere che un Guglielmo ebbe nel 1212 dallo stesso imperatore concessa la terra baronale di Gualtieri
