Très ancienne famille qui a adopté ses armoiries avant le XIIIème siècle. Les changements aux XIIIème et XIVème siècles furent fréquents. Les aînés de cette maison obligeaient leurs cadets à ajouter la brisure (c'est-à-dire un pièce ou meuble) aux armes pleines de l'auteur commun pour distinguer les divers rameaux sortis d'une même souche. En même temps que les armoiries se développaient, le nom de cette maison a commencé à être adopté par ses descendants, mais l'hérédité dans ce nom ne fut absolue qu'à la fin du XIIIème siècle.
