La fecha de fundación de la antigua ciudad etrusca de Corneto ha sido ignorada. Desde la antigüedad se creó en forma de República y fue la Dama de varios castillos circundantes, de los cuales cada año recibía un juramento de lealtad y ofrendas de vasallaje, siempre siendo fiel aliada de las SS Apostólicas.
