Famiglia patrizia napoletana, del Seggio di Nido, iscritta in tutti i suoi rami al "Libro d'Oro Napolitano". Feudataria dall'epoca normanna, decorata dei più illustri Ordini Cavallereschi, quali il Toson d'Oro, il Reale Ordine di S. Gennaro e la Gran Croce di S. Ferdinando e del Merito, ebbe il Grandato di Spagna ed uno dei sette Grandi Uffici del Regno. Molte son le versioni circa l'origine di tal casato: alcuni ritengono che sia una diramazione della famiglia Gualandi di Pisa, altri che abbia preso il nome della terra di Somma nel territorio vesuviano, ed altri ancora, ad onor del vero, la maggior parte, dalla famiglia Spinelli, che aveva proprietà in Somma e detta per questo "De Summa".
