Alcuni autori vogliono che questa antica ed illustre famiglia, sia originaria della Catalogna, altri, invece, che sia originaria della Guascogna e che abbia avuto come capostipite un Raimondo, signore di Miger e Toupers, il quale dall'imperatore Federico II, in memoria degli atti d'eroismo compiuti in Terrasanta, ottenne il privilegio di alzare nelle proprie armi l'aquila imperiale, che tiene lo stendardo con le armi gerosolimitane. Nei ricordi dei tempi andati si leggono alcune varianti di questo cognome, dovute alle solite cause della pronunzia dialettale e dal modo di interpretare nella scritturazione i cognomi, è comune opinione che i De Martino, De Martino e i San Martino, siano tutti rami di un unico ceppo. Il Villabianca che in una parte della sua Sicilia Nobile (Vol. II, pag. 178) aveva scritto. "San Martino di Ramondetto, famiglia molto nobile del nostro Regno, in cui fu trapiantata da Guglielmo della nobilissima famiglia
