Aunque por los patronímicos no se pueda deducir con seguridad el orígen de los linages, si no van acompañados de algun apellido, con todo, el cronista mayor Don Juan Alonso Guerra, en certificacion dada en el año 1737, valiéndose de la autoridad de Don Juan de Mendoza, de Don Gerónimo de Villa, del doctor Isassi y de Don Juan Baños de Velasco, afirma que este patronímico de G. proviene de dos hermanos godos, llamados Diego y Hernando Goterot, los cuales en el principio de la restauracion se distinguieron con señaladas proezas, interpretándose su apellido Goterot por godo ilustre; y de estos dos hermanos pretende que descendieron las familias de G. de los Rios, de Osorio y otras, las cuales repartidas en varias partes, conservando el patronímico G.
