Antichissima famiglia, la quale, al dir di alcuni genealogisti, sarebbe originaria della Provenza; al dir di altri, sebbene senza fondamento alcuno, sarebbe oriunda di S. Maurizio Canavese. Certo è che il capostipite conosciuto è di Torino, un certo Gian Battista. Suo figlio Carlo, nato in S. Maurizio il 4 nov. 1612 e morto a Torino, ottuagenario, il 3 genn. 1694, inizia la fortuna della famiglia con le ricchezze accumulate approvvigionando le truppe francesi in Italia e inizia la tradizione nobiliare della schiatta con l'investitura della baronia di St. Marcel (28 magg. 1665) e della contea di S. Secondo (23 magg. 1679). Ebbe larga prole dalle due mogli. Uno dei figli, Lorenzo Maria, diede luogo alla linea di Barbania, illustrata in modo particolare da quel Luigi (n. a S. Maurizio, Canavese, 25 magg. 1777 e dec. a Torino il 27 sett. 1836), scudiero e confidente di Carlo Alberto, principe di Carignano,
