A antiga e muito nobre família toscana, conhecida em Florença desde o ano de 1409, mudou-se primeiro para Pisa, depois para Pietrasanta e, finalmente, do décimo ao sétimo, para Carrara. Dos duques de Estense, essa família ilustre possuía a nobreza de Novellara e o título de conde, para o ramo masculino, e a grande nobreza de Pisa do grão-duque Pietro Leopoldo da Toscana. Com o decreto ministerial de 15 de janeiro de 1903, os membros da família Del Medico foram reconhecidos pela Consulta Heráldica como nobres os ramos masculino e feminino, apenas o ramo masculino.
