Famiglia, assai antica e di nobile tradizione, cospicua nel territorio di Montepulciano fin dal XIII secolo, anticamente detta anche de' Cavalieri, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia, ove i suoi membri, accolti nelle importanti cariche delle città dove ebbero dimora, furono cospicui ed acquisirono prestigio. Tale cognominizzazione, deriva da soprannomi originati o dal mestiere di pastore di pecore o del beccaio o per particolarità del carattere. L'uso di questo soprannome si trova, ad esempio, nella "Cronica delle cose occorrenti ne' tempi suoi" di Dino Compagni dove si legge: "...Ma i Signori che erano in quel tempo, erano in gran discordia: i quali furono messer Ruggieri da Cuona giudice, messer Iacopo da Certaldo giudice, Bernardo di messer Manfredi Adimari, Pagno Bordoni, Dino Compagni autore di questa Cronaca, e Dino di Giovanni, vocato Pecora, che furono da dì XV d'aprile a dì XV di giugno 1289.".
