Famille très ancienne, mentionnée à Tournon depuis noble Jean seigneur de Chardon, vivant vers 1400. Deux branches: 1° celle d'Annonay qui compte aux XVème et XVIème siècles des notaires à Tournon et le célèbre Bon chanoine de Tournon, conseiller clerc et président au parlement de Paris, conseiller d'ambassade et maître des requêtes de la reine Catherine de Médicis décédée en 1588; 2° celle d'Auvergne, établie dans l'élection de St-Flour et à Allègre, depuis Pierre posséndant fiefs en 1468. Elle dérogea à la noblesse par l'exercice de charges de judicature, produisit des notaires royaux, des magistrats distingués qui furent réanoblis au commencement du XVIIème siècle, de brillants officiers de la maison du roi, un maître de requêtes (1669), un lieutenant général en l'élection de la Basse-Auvergne.
