Antica ed illustre famiglia campana, la quale, al dir di illustri genealogisti, sarebbe un ramo collaterale della nobilissima famiglia Agnese, la quale è stata resa celebre da abili e valorosi cavalieri e le cui origini si perdono nella notte dei tempi: nel 1270 Mario, cavaliere napoletano, ebbe l'incarico di Credenziere del Sale; nel 1272 il cavaliere Marino ricevette il cingolo militare, da re Carlo I; Roberto, gran milite, alla sua morte, avvenuta nel 1289, fu seppellito nella chiesa dei SS. Severino e Sossio. Un Astorgio (* 1451) fu Vescovo di Malta, di Melfi, Ancona, Ascoli e Benevento. Il Magnifico Lancellotto, insieme a Cola Venato e Gualtiero Galeota, fu inviato in Provenza come ambasciatore della città di Napoli, per sollecitare la venuta di Re Renato d'Angiò, erede della regina Giovanna II di Durazzo.
