Antichissima famiglia nobile di Venezia, tra i personaggi più illustri fu quel doge Orso Ipato. Eletto nel 727. E' un venetico autentico e scegliendo lui le truppe ammutinate della Venezia marittima per la prima volta esprimono una forma concreta di autonomia, entrando in polemica con il potere centrale. Vogliono dimostrare il loro valore; e così, quando i Long. assalgono l'Esarcato e la Penapoli e s'impadroniscono di Ravenna, mettendo in fuga l'Esarca Eutichio, che si rifugia ad Eraclea, il doge rompe ogni indugio. Mette da parte i rapporti amichevoli con i longobardi, definiti dal trattato di Anafesto e, armata la flotta, si porta con rapidità su Ravenna. Ravenna viene liberata: è il 729 e per il doge arriva da Bisanzio l'onoreficenza di "Ipato", cioè il titolo di console, che i cronisti avrebbero poi aggiunto come cognome di fam. ad Orso, facendo derivare dai suoi disc. le fam. degli Orseolo, dei Dandolo
