Famiglia elevata al titolo di marchese (mpr.) per concessione fatta dal re Vittorio Emanuele III con suo decreto 28 aprile 1906 ad Ettore, sindaco di Milano, che fu deputato al Parlamento, senatore del Regno, cavaliere di gran croce dell'Ordine della Corona d'Italia, insignito di alte onorificenze estere e di molte cariche ed uffici. Sulla famiglia scrisse un'erudita monografia P.D. Parolini: Memorie storiche della famiglia Ponti, Imola, 1876. Essa deriva dal luogo di Cairate donde nella seconda metà del secolo XV si trasferì nel borgo di Gallarate. Ha per capostipite un Giacomo, padre di Beltramo detto Piza, che testava nel 1459; da Beltramo nacque Giovanni, che per il primo andò ad abitare a Gallaranyte e testò dal 1485. Egli fu padre a Paolino, ricordato come vivente in documenti dal 1485 al 1521 e già defunto nel 1522. Da Poalino nacque Gio. Maria detto Pozzo, che fece testamento nel 1560, e
