Famille vénitienne ancienne et notable qui voulait descendre des nobles Emo. Cette illustre famille avait son origine en Grèce, d'où, dans l'Antiquité, elle s'était déplacée vers la Dalmatie. Après s'être réfugiée à Venise en 997, elle s'est distinguée à tel point qu'en 1297, lors du lock-out du Maggior Consiglio, elle a été incluse parmi les familles patriciennes.
