Antica famiglia trentina, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Una antica tradizione vorrebbe che tal casato sia derivato dalla nobilissima famiglia fiorentina de' Mozzi, alla quale appartenne quell'Andrea de' Mozzi, il quale fu cappellano dei papi Alessandro IV e Gregorio IX, e venne inviato come intermediario per la pace fra bianchi e neri, da papa Niccolò III. Nel 1287 fu nominato vescovo di Firenze e diede impulso alla costruzione della chiesa di S. Croce e dell'Ospedale. Con grande scalpore, nel 1295, Bonifacio VIII (il "servo de' servi", come il papa è chiamato negli atti ufficiali), lo trasferì a Vicenza ("d'Arno in Bacchiglione" Inf. XV, 113), dove Andrea de' Mozzi morì nell'anno successivo. In ogni modo, al dir di altri autori, la famiglia Demozzi, la quale nulla avrebbe in comune con il casato fiorentino, venne fregiata del cavalierato, in seguito ai fedeli servigi
