Famiglia originaria di Amalfi, che si ritiene discenda da Sergio della repubblica amalfitana. Se ne hanno certe notizie dal X secolo. Fu annoverata dal 1200 fra le feudatarie del regno. Si trasferì in Sorrento e fece parte di quel patriziato nel seggio di Porta; indi a Napoli, dove fu aggregata nei due suoi rami al seggio di Nido ed a quello di Capuana, e di tale patriziato fece parte fino all'abolizione dei seggi, e fu perciò iscritta nel Libro d'oro della nobiltà napolitana. Godette anche nobiltà in Salerno, nel seggio del Campo, ed in Capua. Vestì l'abito di Malta nel 1565. Questa nobile famiglia ebbe molti feudi, tra i quali alcuni decorati di titoli importanti; ed altri personaggi la illustrarono: Giovanni, armato cavaliere da re Carlo I; Pietro e Luigi, militi e giustizieri; Ludovico, rappresentante del seggio di Nido nel 1332; Tommaso, al seguito del duca di Calabria inToscana; Antonio,
