Antica ed assai nobile famiglia toscana, con residenza in Lucca, conosciuta come Deodati o Deodato, resa celebre da quel Giovanni, riparatosi in Ginevra ai tempi della riforma religiosa, il quale fu autore di diverse opere. Con un Roberto Deodato, il quale servì il Re Pietro II, da cui ebbe la capitania di Siracusa e di Noto, la famiglia fu trapiantata in Sicilia. Secondo il Villabianca, invece, a portarla in Sicilia fu un Tommaso, giurato in noto nel 1452. In ogni modo, la famiglia visse nobilmente sia in Noto che in Siracusa, ove esercitò le principali cariche. Essa possedette il marchesato di Mezzoiuso o Portopalo, il marchesato di Camporotondo, i feudi di Frigintini, Grampoli, Stafenda, Burgio e Mancino, Nasari, Xaminacca, Vignali e Mendula, Pelagio di Augusta ed altri. Tra i personaggi che maggiormente le hanno reso lustro, ricordiamo: un Pietro, capitano di Siracusa nel 1669-70; un altro Pietro, barone di Frigintini,
