La famiglia è originaria da Cervia e fu ascritta al ceto nobile di quella città nel secolo XVIII, come risulta dagli atti esistenti in quell'Archivio comunale. Infatti il 6 aprile 1772 fu ascritto al Consiglio Generale di Cervia Giuseppe; il 19 gennaio1778 Claudio; il 19 febbraio 1778 Giuseppe Claudio; il 2 dicembre 1790 Adeodato; il 9 marzo 1796 il dottore Carlo e loro discendenti. Fra costoro si distinse in modo particolare per dottrina e patriottismo Adeodato, nato a Cervia il 4 settembre 1768 dal conte Giuseppe e da Teresa Mazzolani. Studiò nel Collegio dei Nobili di Ravenna, segnalandosi fra i suoi coetanei. Quando Bonaparte scese in Italia, il Ressi si diede alla politiche dedicandogli un Saggi politico-filosofico. Fu deputato al Parlamento Cispadano, e fra i deputati del Dipartimento del Rubicone, il Bonaparte scelse Adeodato insieme al letterato Cesare Montalti e al poeta Gianni.
