Having assumed the name of the city for their family, they had to, albeit inadvertently, undergo its metamorphosis as their homeland of origin was designated with the voices of Dertona, then Terdona then Tortona. The various authors do not agree in naming the family according to the times although it is known that it was always such for the Romans until the fifth century, after which for the transposition of the letters D and T in homage to the barbaric corruption of the Latin idiom it became Terdona and then Tortona in the 11th century.
