Pare quasi certo che i membri di tale famiglia siano venuti di Francia; sulla fine del XIII secolo li troviamo fissati in Montepulciano, dove già godevano delle più alte cariche pubbliche. La famiglia ebbe contemporanea dimora anche a Siena, dove Riccardo di Antonio fu ricevuto come cittadino per deliberazione del Collegio di Balìa nell'anno 1495. Fu appunto questo Riccardo il padre del pontefice Marcello II. Alessandro di Ricciardo e Antonio di Ricciardo furono Gonfalonieri di Montepulciano rispettivamente nel 1542 e 1615. Con Francesco Maria di Antonio, senatore di Siena nel 1623, la famiglia si stabilì definitivamente in questa città, dove ebbe i massimi onori pubblici. Tommaso di Bartolomeo fu Patriarca di Gerusalemme e Alessandro di Marcello fu arcivescovo di Siena nel 1740. Nell'anno 1534 il Pontefice Paolo III aveva ceduto al cardinale C., che poi doveva divenire papa a sua volta col nome di Marcello II, i beni dell'antichissimo eremo
