Pedro Vitales y Miguel de Salazar dicen que este apellido es originario de Italia; pero aparece radicado en Cataluña desde tiempos muy antiguos y por catalán lo tienen otros tratadistas. Tuvo casas en la ciudad de Barcelona, en la villa de Roses (Gerona) y en la villa de Gerri, del partido judicial de Sort (Lérida). En esta provincia hay también varios pueblos denominados Coll, cuyo nombre debe estar relacionado con el del linaje. Pasó a Baleares, y hay quien opina que Raimundo Colleto que firma en una donación hecha en 1239 por el conde don Nuño de los Bernardos, fue el fundador de la familia Coll en Mallorca. Lo cierto es que ésta se dividió en varias ramas, y que una de ellas ya estaba arraigada en la villa de Sóller a principios del siglo XIV, ocupando sus caballeros los oficios públicos de la primera distinción.
