Antiguo y noble linaje catalán, con casa solar en Lérida. Sus hijos fueron señores de Preixens y caballeros de la Orden de San Juan, en el Gran Priorato del Principado. Pedro D., natural de Cataluña, pasó a Valencia con el rey don Jaime I de Aragón, y fue más tarde alcaide de Mojente. El mismo monarca le heredó en Elche y Alicante. Combatió a los rebeldes de Orihuela. Otro Pedro D. fue en 1344 del consejo de guerra del rey don Pedro IV. Bernardo de Espés, ricohombre catalán, estuvo en 1409 en la guerra de cerdeña. Una línea de los Espés moró en la ciudad de Lérida, y de ella descendió Rafaela de Espés, natural de Lérida, y mujer de Francisco Gómez, de la misma naturaleza, del que tuvo a Francisco Gómez y Espés, señor y natural de Matellu, que casó con doña María de Llerbat y Mediona, naciendo de esta unión Antonio de Espés de Llerbat y Gomar, natural de Lérida y caballero de la Orden de Santiago, en la que ingresó en 3 de noviembre de 1626.
