A família feudal antiga e muito nobre, originária de Basilicata, no Reino de Nápoles, passou para a Sicília e, mais precisamente, para Messina, Taormina e Acireale. Diz a tradição que Riccardo, nascido em 1160, filho do juiz Giovanni de Salvia, é visto por seu progenitor. Disse Riccardo, senhor de Rivisco, na Cúria, e Santa Sofia, em Bella, juntamente com os irmãos Pandolfo, Alessandro e Pietro, participaram da terceira cruzada na Terra Santa e obtiveram o título de rei Guilherme II, com o privilégio de 13 de março de 1186. Barão de Santa Sofia e depois o de Conte. O feudo de Santa Sofia foi herdado por Gerardo, Bernardo, Nicola, Iacopo a seu filho Giovanni, nascido em 1430, enquanto a briga de Rivisco a seu filho Alemanno, senhor de Rivisco (ramo extinto).
