Ancient and very noble feudal family, originally from Basilicata, in the Kingdom of Naples, that moved to Sicily and, more precisely, in Messina, Taormina and Acireale, and that has worldwide spread, over the centuries. According to what has been handed down, its founder was Riccardo, born in 1160, son of the judge Giovanni de Salvia. This Riccardo, Lord of Rivisco, in the locality Curia and of St. Sophia, in the locality Bella, along with his brothers Pandolfo, Alessandro and Pietro took part in the Third Crusade in the Holy Land and received by King William II, with Privilege of 13 March 1186, the title of Baron of Santa Sofia and later the title of Count.
