Ancienne et très noble famille féodale, originaire de la Basilicate, dans le Royaume de Naples, qui s'est déplacée en Sicile et, plus précisément, à Messine, Taormina et Acireale, et qui s'est répandue dans le monde entier, au cours des siècles. Selon ce qui a été transmis, son fondateur était Riccardo, né en 1160, fils du juge Giovanni de Salvia. Ce Riccardo, seigneur de Rivisco, dans la localité Curia et de Sainte-Sophie, dans la localité Bella, avec ses frères Pandolfo, Alessandro et Pietro a participé à la troisième croisade en Terre Sainte et reçu par le roi Guillaume II, avec privilège du 13 mars 1186, le titre de baron de Santa Sofia et plus tard le titre de comte. Le fief de Sainte-Sophie a été légué par Gerardo, de Bernardo, de Nicola, de Jacopo, à son fils Giovanni, né en 1430, tandis que le fief de Rivisco à son fils Alemanno,
