Antiga e muito nobre família feudal, originária de Basilicata, no Reino de Nápoles, que se mudou para a Sicília e, mais precisamente, em Messina, Taormina e Acireale, e que se espalhou pelo mundo, ao longo dos séculos. De acordo com o que foi transmitido, seu fundador foi Riccardo, nascido em 1160, filho do juiz Giovanni de Salvia. Este Riccardo, Senhor de Rivisco, na localidade Cúria e de Santa Sofia, na localidade Bella, junto com seus irmãos Pandolfo, Alessandro e Pietro participou da Terceira Cruzada na Terra Santa e foi recebido pelo Rei Guilherme II, com Privilégio de 13 de março de 1186, o título de Barão de Santa Sofia e mais tarde o título de Conde. O feudo de Santa Sofia foi legado por Gerardo, de Bernardo, de Nicola, de Jacopo, a seu filho Giovanni, nascido em 1430, enquanto o feudo de Rivisco a seu filho Alemanno, Senhor de Rivisco
