Antica ed illustre prosapia, la quale trae il proprio nome dal latino "Carolis", che costituisce un nucleo di famiglie italiane che sempre si son distinte per virtù civiche, letterarie e militari. In premio di tali qualità ottennero, ii Carlo, di Carlo, de Carlo o Carli, ovunque dimorarono, varie ricompense nobiliari. Un primo nucleo lo rinveniamo in territorio ligure, precisamente nella riviera di Ponente. Nel 1254 il marchese Emanuele di Clavesana concedeva in feudo a Rubaldo, del fu Odone, la metà del luogo di Onza. Nel 1380 Luchino fu priore del magistrato di guerra e nel 1389 anziano. Nel 1444 i membri di tal famiglia formarono uno dei 74 alberghi di Genova. Un altro nucleo lo rinveniamo in Veneto benché ancor prima in Istria. Ed infatti nel 1208 un Vanerio fu teste giurato nel trattato di pace tra le città di Pirano e Rovigno. Nel 1379 un certo Pietro figurava tra
