Familia de Calabria, originaria de Lorena, Francia, de tradición antigua y noble, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. Originalmente llamado de Certour o Di Certous, se cree que pasaron a Calabria con la expedición francesa de 1528 y que la cognominización se hizo italiana en el siglo siguiente. El nombre de esta familia es ciertamente patronímico, es decir, deriva de un antepasado que, de clara virtud y carga, dio su nombre a sus descendientes. La cierta nobleza de esta familia se puede inferir de la presencia de la misma en "L'Armorial Général", donde también se menciona su escudo: azul, al galgo de plata que pasa. La familia fue ennoblecida por méritos y honores militares, tanto que se jacta el cargo de secretario del rey, en el período de tiempo 1704-1726.
