Antica ed assai nobile famiglia siciliana, detta Giovanni, De Giovanni o Di Giovanni, la quale si vuole originaria di Valenza e dello stesso stipite dei Centelles. In ogni modo, essa godette nobiltà in Messina ed in Palermo. Un Pietro fu regio tesoriere nel Regno di Sicilia nel 1283; un Palamede vestì l'abito di Malta e fu gran priore di Pisa e Venezia, nel 1373; un Enrico fu pure cavaliere di detto ordine, balì di Venosa e gran priore di Messina 1462; un Ugo fu cavaliere 1472; un Amerigo vestì anche lui l'abito di Malta 1477; un Francesco fu senatore di Palermo negli anni 1559-60, 1564-65, 1569-70, 1579-80 e Vincenzo, suo figlio nel "Palermo restaurato", scrisse che egli fu giudicato uno dei più buoni cittadini, ricco e liberale, e aggiunse che si riferiva nella città che, all'annunzio della morte di lui, il vicerè Marco Antonio Colonna avesse esclamato: "oggi è morto
