Ancienne et noble famille du Royaume des Deux-Siciles, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie et d'Europe. Selon ce qui a été raconté par l'historien et généalogiste messinais Giuseppe Galluppi, la famille Maggio a d'abord eu un berceau dans la région napolitaine d'où elle s'est ensuite déplacée à Messine, jouissant de la noblesse depuis le XVIe siècle. Au fil du temps, la famille s'est cependant divisée en plusieurs lignées, dont certaines ont également prospéré dans les régions d'Agrigente et de Trapani. Le célèbre généalogiste Giovan Battista Crollalanza traite également de cette famille noble, dans les volumes de son "Dictionnaire historico-blasonique des familles nobles et notables italiennes éteintes et florissantes". Parmi les personnages qui ont le plus illustré la famille Maggio, on se souvient : Giovan Vincenzo et Pietro di Maggio, tous deux médecins, si distingués face à la peste de 1624 à Castelvetrano
