Famiglia campana, originaria di Campagna, in Principato Citra, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia, il quale risulta diviso nei rami di Mignano, dei marchesi di Albano, dei marchesi di Mottola e dei Nunziante d'Afflitto. Tal casato raggiunse la nobiltà, però, solamente al principio del secolo decimo nono, grazie a Vito Nunziante, che, in tempi assai brevi, acquisì titoli e benemerenze. Il nostro Vito nacque a Campagna d'Eboli il 12 aprile 1775 ed abbracciò la carriera militare, divenendo tenente generale, quartier mastro generale dei RR. Eserciti e Ministro di Stato. Riuscì a dare lustro al proprio nome già nel 1799, ovvero quando, in qualità di semplice alfiere contribuì alla disfatta della Repubblica Napoletana ed alla restaurazione del Regno. Indi, divenne uno dei più valorosi comandanti di re Ferdinando IV di Borbone. Lo stesso sovrano, nel 1816, lo decorò il titolo di marchese di San Ferdinando, paese in provincia
