Le prime memorie certe, di questa celebre e potente famiglia, che si vuole derivata dai conti di Prato, o altrimenti dai Mangona, risalgono al 1068, quando viveva Alberto conte di Panico, il quale, insieme al priore figlio Milone o Smilone, fece la dotazione del monastero di S. Maria di Roffreno nel 1074. I nipoti, Guido, Ugo e Ranieri, donarono il castello di Riversano nel Cesenate alla chiesa di Ravenna nel 1144 e 1157. Il suddetto Smilone aggiunse alle contea di Panico quelle di Montarsigo, Vignola e Intrigeta, ed il conte Ugolino al principio del XIII secolo estese il suo dominio sui territori di Sirano, Domalfolle, Ignano, Lamola, Borgadello, Caprara, Sassopertoso, Venola, Carviliano, Salvaro, Cedrecchia, Capriglio, Bedoleto, Motaguto, Veggio, Campiano, Conflente, Montefredente, Vedegheto, e Vigliola con la quarta parte di Monzuno, Bibulano, Castel dell'Alpi, Aqualto, e Corizano.
