Antica e assai nobile famiglia del Regno delle Due Sicilie, di origine francese, di chiara e avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e d'Europa. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, essa discende dal nobile casato di Tolosa de Paule, lo stesso da cui fiorì Antoine de Paule (Tolosa, 1554 – La Valletta, 9 giugno 1636), Gran Maestro dell'Ordine di Malta dal 1623 al 1636 e fondatore della città maltese Paola. In ogni modo, la famiglia appare presente nel Meridione d'Italia sin dal XIV secolo, con due nuclei principali: l'uno in Sicilia nel catanese, l'altro in Calabria a Monteleone. D'altronde, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che hanno reso illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare.
