La famiglia si identifica con la stirpe dei Tomasi di Ancona, originata da quella dei Leopardi di Costantinopoli. E' noto agli storiografi il ruolo preminente assunto in Bisanzio dalla Casata Leopardi, che le vicissitudini politiche dei tempi spinsero a rifugiarsi in terra picena. Questa Casata fu grande e potente sotto la dominazione degli Eraclidi, con i quali si imparentò. Alla morte di Eraclito I nell'anno 641, essendo sorta la guerra tra i pretendenti al trono di Bisanzio, la famiglia Leopardi fu costretta a fuggire dall'oriente e si rifugiò in Ancona dove un ramo venne detto, dal suo capostipite, Di Tommaso o Tommasi. Ebbero antica sede e rinomanza anche nelle Puglie. Furono ascritti alla Nobiltà di Bari, Barletta, Giovinazzo, Trani, Molfetta e Gallipoli e furono decorati del titolo di Conte Palatino.
