Antica ed illustre famiglia, oriunda della Guascogna, detta La Via, Di Via o, più semplicemente, Via, passata a risiedere in Sicilia, nel secolo XIII, ove godette nobiltà in Messina, Catania, Palermo e Nicosia. Un Andrea fu notaro dell'Ufficio della R. Cancelleria, nel 1479; un Francesco, con privilegio dato il 13 marzo 1529, ottenne concessione del titolo di regio cavaliere; un Giovanni Leonardo, ottenne la castellania e tenenza del castello di San Filippo, già tenuta da Filippo suo padre; un Antonio fu senatore di Catania nel 1586-87 e forse egli stesso come figlio di Francesco Cardives ebbe il 6 maggio 1555 investitura di Buterno e Grado; un Giuseppe fu pro-conservatore in Nicosia nel 1655; un Lorenzo, con privilegio dato il 19 maggio 1674, ottenne concessione del titolo di barone di Sant'Agrippina; un Giacomo fu pro-conservatore in Nicosia; un Domenico fu capitano di giustizia in Nicosia nel 1756-57; un Felice, barone dell'ufficio
