Si vuole originaria di Castiglia; la tradizione familiare le dà a capostipite un Giacomo, che prese parte alla celebre battaglia combattuta nel 1037 nella valle di Tamara; dice inoltre che un Giovanni, discendente di Giacomo, nel 1195 pugnò valorosamente nella sanguinosa giornata di Alarcos contro i Maomettani e cadde sul campo gridando Por Dios y por el Rey; grido assunto quale divisa dai suoi discendenti. Il Villabianca (Sicilia Nobile, appendice, col. II pag. 233), invece, scrive: "La famiglia è nobilissima; ha sua origine dal re di Persia, e a persuasione di Ajtone re d'Armenia si fece Cristiano l'anni di Christo 1258". Comunque è certo che la famiglia godette nobiltà in Napoli nei Seggi di Capuana e di Porto e nella piazza dei Saliti (di tale piazza si vuole che nel 1332, sia stato rappresentante un Cecco, quando re Roberto chiamò tutti i rappresentanti dei Seggi per ovviare ai continui rapimenti
