Antica e Nobile famiglia anteriore al 1300. Il Pontefice Bonifacio IX (Pietro Tomacelli), nell'anno 1401,sù consiglio del suo segretario Bartolomeo Franchi conferì il Vescovado di Pistoia a Matteo Diamanti ,Canonico di S. Zenone,figlio di Ser Lazzaro Cavaliere Gaudente,e nipote della sorella del Vesovo suo predecessore rinunciatario. Nel 1409, si tenne in Pisa un Concilio Generale di ventiquattro Cardinali,tre Patriarchi,180 Vescovi e Arcivescovi,300 Abati e 282 Teologi ove partecipò il detto Matteo per creare il vero Pontefice Alessandro V,contro gli scismatici condannati Gregorio XII e l'antipapa Benedetto. Il Vescovo Matteo partecipò anche al Concilio di Costanza nel 1417,assieme al suo illustre e nobile concittadino,dottissimo e celeberrimo Sozzomeno dei Sozzomeni che dettò in quella occasione,il metodo per l'elezione del nuovo Pontefice.
